❤️ Follow a Patient Down the Risk Tree
Set a patient's blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking and weight. A marker walks them down the decision tree SAS fitted on 5,209 Framingham patients, and the chart shows how the share of deaths from coronary heart disease (CHD) builds at each split.
The tree shows the share of each group's deaths by cause. 61.8% of patients were still alive when the study ended, so read the numbers as relative risk between groups, not as an individual's chance of dying.
The tree
Box colour = CHD share (darker = higher) · splits in the order SAS chose them
CHD share along this patient's path
Each bar is one step down the tree
Three patient profiles (k-means, k = 3)
Cluster centroids on four variables · each axis runs from the lowest to the highest centroid · dashed tick = overall average · hover any point for its value
What costs the most years?
Average age at death compared with the low-risk cluster (74.4 yrs)
- Heavy smokers (25.4 cigarettes/day) die about 10.4 years earlier.
- Hypertensive patients (183 mmHg, 259 mg/dL) die about 1.6 years earlier.
- Age at death is only recorded for patients who died, so these are conditional averages.
